Machu Picchu, the Los City of the Incas
The most recognizable symbol of the Incan Empire, Machu Picchu sits above the valley of Urubamba in Peru. Built around 1450, it was mysteriously abandoned about a hundred years later, around the time that the Spanish conquests. The site was forgotten for many centuries until 1911, when an American historian brought attention to it once again. From that time, the historic area has grown in leaps and bounds as a popular tourist attraction. As of 1981, it was officially declared a sanctuary of Peruvian history, and it is also listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
