Visiting the Incredible Ruins of Machu Picchu
Located in Peru, Machu Picchu is known as the sacred city of the Inca Indians. The only way to get there is by trekking the Inca Trail or by train coming out of Cuzco. For centuries, this part of the country was lost, never having been found by Spaniards. On site are many wonderful ruins, which were originally palaces and temples. Not only is the stone work of the ruins fascinating, but the scenery is breathtaking. The landscape is lush and green, making it one of the most beautiful places in the world. The topography of this part of Peru is uneven, which looks out over the Urubamba Canyon and its rushing river some 300 feet below. Sitting close to 8,000 feet above sea level, there are two peaks with the smaller being called Hauyna Picchu, which means "young peak" and the second, Machu Picchu, meaning "old peak".
