Machu Picchu Overview

Machu Picchu is located near Cuzco, Peru, and is the site of the ruins of an ancient Incan city. It was first discovered in the early part of the 20th century, and is considered by many to be one of the most spectacular sights in the world. Visiting Manchu Picchu is a must if you are going to be visiting Peru.

The site of Machu Picchu is situated 1,000 feet above the Urubamba river. Today, the purpose Machu Picchu served in Inca life is still relatively unknown; however, many researchers believe Machu Picchu served as a type of resort for wealthy ancient Incans.

Regardless of the purpose Machu Picchu served, there is no doubt the site was well hidden and protected. Incans who wanted to travel to Machu Picchu traveled up long valleys surrounded by watchtowers and checkpoints.

Visitors who are visiting Machu Picchu today should take the time to thoroughly investigate the site and explore the many sights in the area. Guided tours can help you gain a deeper insight into this beautiful ancient city.

One of the sights you should make sure not to miss when visiting Machu Picchu is the Temple of the Sun. The temple is located near the summit of the main city. Make sure to take notice of the stonework of the temple. Much of the stonework here is quite distinctive and impressive.

You will also want to make sure to walk up Waynapicchu. The walk is steep but short, and is certainly well worth it as it offers some of the most impressive views of the entire area.

If you will be visiting Peru, your travel here will not be complete with a visit to Machu Picchu.
