Enjoy Antarctica Travel by Small or Luxurious Ships
Tourism and Antarctica travel can claim its official beginning in the late 1960's when professional expedition operators began to offer trips. Today there are more than 30 ships available to carry visitors into the Antarctic. Annually about 20,000 visitors will briefly go ashore while another 8,000 sail the waters only or fly over. There is a variety of ship sizes from one that will accommodate 50 people to huge liners taking 1,000 passengers or more. Ships also differ in what sort of amenities they offer. Mainstream cruise liners offer Antarctica travel guests every luxury while small and expedition ships serve only the basic necessities. Large ships often will not allow passengers to go ashore at any point during the voyage, while small ships serving 100 passengers or less often will.
